Character Creator
Facial morph system and production direction for real-time avatar personalization.
A cross-disciplinary Animaze team project focused on scalable facial morphs, runtime-ready customization and expressive personas.
A character creator designed for broad personalization without breaking the avatars.
VertexFam contributed to the development of the Animaze character creator as part of a wider team effort across art, rigging, design and programming, helping shape a scalable system for expressive and highly customizable personas.
The goal was broad personalization without turning the creator into an unstable collection of one-off shapes. The work required practical planning around facial anatomy, morph compatibility, topology behavior and real-time deformation.
Built inside a custom real-time engine workflow.
The creator had to respect the engine’s existing capabilities and mechanics. VertexFam helped define the design and selection of facial morph targets, component compatibility, avatar presentation, UI-facing customization logic and runtime constraints, working closely with the Animaze team to translate artistic direction into a functional production system.
Facial Morph Core
Morph targets for the nose, mouth, eyes, face shape and neck were designed as a coherent customization foundation.
Combination Safety
The system was shaped to keep different facial combinations compatible and avoid unpleasant deformation artifacts.
Animation Readiness
Deformations were optimized so the avatars remained usable for expression, animation and real-time runtime use.
Team Coordination
The work connected art direction, rigging, programming and engine constraints into a production-friendly workflow.
Many possible faces, one stable technical system.
During the analysis phase, the team identified the key anatomical forms needed to generate a wide range of credible facial combinations. Rather than relying on an excessive number of isolated shapes, the system was structured around a minimal, efficient and scalable morph set, appropriate for the project’s time constraints, team size and budget.
The main challenge was delivering a creator that felt rich and expressive to the end user while remaining stable for production. Clean topology behavior, correct deformation, coherent PBR-compatible materials, robust rigging, DCC interoperability and runtime performance all had to function together as one system.
Morph Target Architecture
A structured morph set supported facial variety while reducing conflicts between shape combinations.
Predictable Parameters
Controls were planned for intuitive use and repeatable results, so users could generate believable faces quickly.
Runtime & Mobile Scalability
Deformation behavior was kept practical for animation, avatar runtime, mobile optimization and cross-platform use, including iOS-focused constraints.
